WEDNESDAYS ARE 1/2 DAYS for students. This means I only teach my reading class, and support math teachers on Wednesdays. It is a luxury to have a singularity of focus. There is something about planning out a day when you only have one class for which you need to prepare. We are digging in deeper to unit 2, which means a new genre, a new project and a brand new set of stories.
PRO TEACHING TIP: If you are playing an online game like Quizizz — which i HIGHLY recommend, put your entire class into three teams. Why? At the end of the game the announce 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winners — which means everyone in class wins. Teachers are crafty, like that.
We had a new person come to our staff meeting today. Outsiders are usually surprised by our friendly, cheerful atmosphere. Of course, everyone was in a particularly good mood because today was Birthday Cake Staff Meeting. All that sugar really revs the group up! “You guys seem like you get along pretty well.” She told us. We do. We’ve got some bumps and irritations like any collection of random people, but in general, people are kind to each other. It is a very pleasant room to walk into.
I love collaborating with other teachers. It has been my favorite part of this year’s schedule. I love being in the room while another teacher is teaching. I get so many great ideas to incorporate into my own classroom, and I have loved being there to support our students. I can be working with a student who lost, or upset, or frustrated and the other teacher just keep on doing their thing. There is this really powerful flow. I love that kind of synergy where we become more than the sum of our parts.
Tomorrow is another leadership day. Our little group is coming along really well, and I look forward to our meetings. Three of my leadership students came by during the day to take pictures for our yearbook. Last year, we took pictures for the yearbook on my iPhone; the ENTIRE YEARBOOK! The pictures looked great. This year, we are able to use the school Ipads which is a relief. Although, all last year they used my phone and no one ordered anything on Amazon, or dropped it.
Keep moving forward,
