I’m sure you are wracked with curiosity about my whereabouts for days 12 and 13. Here’s the truth, Day 12 of school was a Thursday, and the Husband informed me that I fell asleep like I’d been unplugged, and Fridays are always kind of iffy for me. Which brings us to the 14th day of school.
Having Monday off, put my reading students into a state of semi-sleep. I looked at them as we had done ONE vocab word and thought, “NOPE.” We set aside our reading books, and did about 10 minutes of acting. We are prepping towards a Living History Museum when we finish this unit, so technically all the acting we do is PART of reading, but please don’t tell my students that. They perked right up, after a couple of improv games, and we settled back into the work before us. I’m really glad that I got to take the class about integrating arts into the reading curriculum because it has given a whole stack of tools to support our reading instruction.
I got to hang out in another teacher’s classroom for math today. I’m going to be supporting our math teachers by working with students each day. Right now, I’m just kind of observing the math classes to get a feel for what they are doing. I was in a 4th grade teacher’s room today, and she is BRILLIANT. The pace of her lesson was perfect, and I loved observing her teach.
Teachers don’t often get a chance to see other teachers in action. We kind of work alone, but every now and then you get to watch someone else and you think, “OH! That’s a really smart way to do that!” It was incredible to be in a room and watch someone working their craft with such calm proficiency.
I’ve spent my evening at my kids back-to-school night. It consisted of me following their schedule and hearing about every teacher’s grading system. Please, don’t tell anyone, but I cut 6th period for both of them because LONG DAY MUST END. Also, right before I left for the back to school night, I had put a Shepherd’s pie in the oven and I was REALLY HUNGRY. I might mention here that I really love potatoes. I enjoyed see all the classrooms that my Offspring visit, but hearing about a syllabus in every room makes you wonder if there wasn’t a better way to get to know my children’s teachers. I don’t know.
DID YOU KNOW that tomorrow is Wednesday, already? That’s crazy, right? All in all, we had a pretty good day at school, and I FINALLY got to eat some of that shepherd’s pie. I have high hopes for tomorrow too. I made an entire set of memes with my fact on them — it is part of an online quiz game my students play. A meme pops up every time they answer a question, and I thought it would be VERY entertaining if I was the meme. I can’t wait to see their reaction. I will keep you posted.
Keep moving forward,
